Description
This 2’x3′ vinyl banner allows you to teach about icon colors and patterns week to week even when you don’t have time or room for mixing paints or setting up a permanent scriptorium in your classroom. Use with washable paint sticks, and the banners wipe completely clean with baby wipes. The pattern is the one that iconographers use for study and as the basis for writing real icons!
Teach the story of the Myrrh-bearing women as your students bring this pattern to life with colors.
- Read or sing the Paschal stichera, especially this verse: “The myrrh-bearing women at deep dawn drew nigh to the tomb of the Giver of life; they found an Angel sitting upon the stone, and he, addressing them, in this manner did say: Why seek ye the Living among the dead? Why mourn ye the Incorruptible amid corruption? Go, proclaim it unto His disciples.”
- Talk to your students about the different colors in icons and where else they appear, for example:
- Blue: water, sky, heaven, spiritual reality, Virgin Mary, Christ, Angelic clothing
- Red: Power, fire, martyrdom, blood, Pascha, fruit, wine, clothing of angels, the Holy Theotokos, Christ
- Green: Life, Holy Spirit, gardens, plants, clothing of healers and wonderworker, angelic clothing, victory crowns, paradise
- Gold: indicates royalty or divinity, used in crowns, liturgical service, to show glory
These wipe-clean icon patterns are favorites at in-person Accessible Church School workshops! We recommend using them with the 12-pack set of washable Crayon brand paint sticks. (If you want to make a more permanent icon, use gold paint pens and oil pastels instead. Permanent options will not wipe clean!)
