A synaxarian for our youngest children! I love this new little treasure! Kathryn writes in her familiar poetic short verse about some of our favorite saints of the Nativity Season. The illustrations are detailed and emotional- something I didn’t expect from simple black and white- but the effect is stunning! I’m impressed! This will be a great one for St. Nicholas Day or your child’s stocking this Christmas!

The Light of Nativity is an excellent choice for holiday reading because it guides the children along the parade of commemorations between St. Philip’s Day and Christmas, introducing them to heavenly friends who can become lifelong companions and making it especially meaningful for families seeking religious children’s books during the season.

The high-contrast, black-and-white images immediately caught my toddler grandchildren’s attention. They found them engaging, encouraging even the littlest pre-readers to touch and explore the illustrations, making the book more appealing for young children during holiday reading time.

This board book is absolutely gorgeous. Various saints celebrated throughout the Nativity Fast and Theophany season are featured with Kathryn Reetzke’s lovely text and Abraham Fillar’s bold, contrasting illustrations. I love the black and white aesthetic – it makes the text sing and holds one’s eye. For littles, the board book will provide lots of tiny-hand and tiny-eye interest, but this is also a thoughtful book for older kids. Some questions you can easily ask when reading include: (1) What’s happening in this illustration? (2) What details do we see in the illustrations that might be mirrored in iconography of these saints? (3) Before we read the text, what do the pictures tell us about what’s happening and the people in this moment? (4) How does this relate to the Nativity Season or Incarnation of Christ? (5) What is the setting of these moments? (6) What senses does each page evoke? I love asking questions like these when I read with littles (or for myself), and you can do that in abundance with this little book! For my family, I’m using it as a supplement for when we read about the saints throughout the Nativity Fast and Theophany season. Park End Books really did a lovely job combining these elements: baby-and-toddler friendly details with some deeper text and illustrations for discussion and reading with older children. It’s really just lovely!
